What To Look For When Buying A Travel Blackout Blind

It’s a good idea to check out reviews before you buy blackout travel blinds, but it’s also important you look out for some key features like the blackout blinds material and ease of use. Here are some top tips of what to look for when you purchase your travel black out blind.

Lightweight and easy to transport

Obviously the best blackout travel blinds will be ones that don’t take up lots of space! Ideally the best portable blackout blinds fold down into a small bag and weigh as little as possible particularly if you’re travelling hand luggage only!

Easy to put up and remove

A key consideration should be how easy the temporary blackout blind is to put up and take down. If you’re travelling around, you don’t want to spend a lot of time trying to get the temporary blackout blinds up, particularly if the kids are tired and already starting to melt down!

Size eg fit to caravan or velux blackout blind

Size is another important thing to check, particularly if you’re looking for the best blackout curtains for an unusually shaped window such as a caravan or a Velux style window.

Velcro versus suction cups

This is really down to personal preference but most of the best black out blinds use either velcro to attach to the window or suction cups. Sometimes people find suction cups don’t work as well but a handy hint is to make sure they’re slightly damp when sticking them to the glass, or lightly coat with Vaseline or cooking oil which will help create a good seal.

Colour and design plus type of blackout fabric

If you’re looking for a pink blackout blind for travel or a funky purple blackout blind – you may be out of luck. Most of the blackout travel blinds on the market tend to be, well, black! But in a way black blackout curtains make total sense as they’re less likely to let the light in. Some brands also make them in cream colour or with cute designs on which is ideal for a very young child’s nursery blackout blind.

When looking to buy blackout blind, it’s important to check the blackout lining fabric too, to ensure it’s fairly thick and won’t let any shards of light in. Some of the best blackout curtains and blinds have a textile rating which ensures the fabrics used meet high safety and environmental standards.

From your experience, which blackout blind/curtain is the best for repeated use? We will be using this while traveling and I don’t understand how the Velcro options work? Can you take the Velcro tabs off of the window frame and reuse?

Hi Rebecca! For traveling when you’re constantly taking up and down I’d definitely consider either the Gro Anywhere or easynight Blackout Blind. The velcro is used for different things on different blinds. With the Gro Anywhere it’s the suction cups that stick to the window, and the velcro is then used to gather up any excess fabric so that it’s smooth against the window and won’t let light in. With the easynight blind, you use suction cups for the windows, then the velcro attaches to the blind and attaches the curtain onto the suction cups. Don’t worry – neither of these use the velcro to stick to the window frame so you won’t be peeling off paint or window frame when you take it down 🙂 The advantages of the easynight blind is that it’s the largest one on offer so has the best chance of covering most windows you’ll encounter. It’s also very light at 490 grams if luggage weight is a consideration. But it does take more time to set up initially than the Gro Anywhere blind as you need to get all the suction cups and velcro set up. Gro Anywhere still is a good size and is literally just pull out of the bag and use the suction cups to stick to the window. I hope that helps and have fun on your travels!
